While Manitowoc County’s population has increased slightly, it is also aging.
Those were some key metrics of population data discussed with Progress Lakeshore Executive Director Jamie Zastrow and Chamber Manitowoc Executive Director Abbey Quistorf.
Zastrow explained on WOMT’s Lakeshore Business Compass that population data from the Baylakes Area Regional Planning Commission shows that from 2018 to 2023, the county grew by 4.4%, or about 3,500 people.
She also noted, “They’re predicting that that population is expected to increase by another 6.2% between 2023 and 2028.”
The two economic groups also examine the unemployment rate, which is currently low.
However, Zastrow notes that they look more closely at the Labor Force Participation Rate, which is down in Manitowoc County.
The rate counts all those looking for employment, as well as those who already have jobs.
In the county, many people are opting out of the workforce.
But there are many reasons for that.
“That doesn’t mean they’re lazy and don’t want to work, it means they’re retiring,” she described. “They’re in that category where they’re counted as a person that could be in the labor force, but they’ve retired.”
The population data also indicates that Manitowoc County is experiencing an aging population.
Quistorf says that means there could be a rising demand for healthcare and senior services.
Both groups are focusing on attracting more young professionals to come to the county.
