Grow It Forward in Manitowoc is receiving assistance from a separate school district to provide breakfast and lunch to children.
Executive Director Amber Daugs said on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that the Manitowoc Public School District would only be able to provide meals to students during the three weeks of summer school.
Which Daugs noted means, “The YMCA, the Boys and Girls Club, and Southfield Learning Center were not going to be receiving meals outside of those three weeks.”
Daugs says she spoke with the Department of Public Instruction, and they recommended that they contact the Two Rivers Public School District to see if they would sponsor extending the meals to the childcare locations throughout the summer.
Grow It Forward now goes to Two Rivers on behalf of the district to distribute them.
“We’re providing food for about 300 kids,” she noted. “And they receive those meals five days a week as a part of the Summer Feeding Program.”
The Summer Feeding Program can also help children who don’t attend the YMCA or Boys and Girls Club.
Daugs says the non-congregate meal option will start on July 29th and can be picked up either in Two Rivers or at the Grow It Forward office in Manitowoc.
She also credits Two Rivers Public Schools for having an emphasis on healthy produce, rather than relying on canned goods.
