The week of America’s Independence Day is here, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is asking residents to keep safety in mind.
The annual Operation Dry Water campaign will take place from July 4th through the 6th.
This is a nationwide campaign that aims to prevent boating while impaired to keep the waters safe. Boating under the influence is illegal in Wisconsin and can be punishable by criminal charges.
Nationally, impaired boating continues to be one of the most significant dangers when it comes to recreational boater fatalities.
During Operation Dry Water, DNR conservation wardens and local law enforcement agencies will share educational tips while keeping an eye out for those who are not sober while captaining a watercraft.
While not against the law, the campaign will also be encouraging everyone on a boat, not just its operator, to remain sober.
Major April Dombrowski with the DNR explained, “We want everyone to enjoy Wisconsin’s beautiful waterways this holiday weekend, but safety must come first.”
