Wisconsin Public Service is reminding everyone to be cautious of scammers, especially with summer here.
There are several phone scams of people pretending to be workers from WPS and may even manipulate a caller ID to claim they are an energy company.
Scammers will then threaten to shut off your energy for a short time and demand immediate payment, often through a prepaid debit card or a third-party digital payment app, such as Venmo.
If not over the phone, scammers can also come to your door and claim to be a WPS employee.
The power company states that a genuine WPS employee will have an ID badge readily available, whereas an impostor won’t.
WPS advises that if you’re unsure if you’re being scammed, don’t respond to a phone call or text message, and be aware of your options regarding payment methods.
