Kiel’s Cade Voelker pitched a complete-game one-hit shutout as Manitowoc Legion Post 88 19-u defeated Sault. St. Marie 4 to 0 in their opening game of the Marinette Firecracker tournament Friday afternoon.
Manitowoc scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run double by Kiel’s Aaron Stephany and a double-play ground out by Manitowoc Lincoln’s Seth Gibeault.
They would add another run in the home half of the fourth to cap off the scoring. Stephany and Manitowoc Lincoln’s Zachary Brandl had two hits each to back the pitching of Voelker, who walked two and struck out 10 to earn the victory.
Hunter Thorkilson took the loss for The Sault Black Sox, going just two innings, allowing three runs on three hits, walking three, and striking out none.
Manitowoc improves to 8- 3 on the season and will play Green Bay Southwest in their next game of the tournament at 11 a.m. Saturday morning.
