Wisconsin health officials are warning of a virus being spread by ticks.
While rare in Wisconsin, the Powassan virus has been confirmed in the state due to individuals being bitten by deer ticks or black-legged ticks.
Currently, there are seven cases across the country, including two in the northwestern part of the state, with one in Bayfield County and the other in Pierce County.
Symptoms of Powassan virus can show one week to one month after being bitten.
Most people infected with the virus will show no symptoms; however, early signs and symptoms will include fever, headaches, vomiting, and muscle weakness.
Severe cases will come along with symptoms of confusion, paralysis, seizures, and meningitis.
Powassan virus causes death in about 10% of severe cases, and half of those who survive will experience permanent or long-term neurologic symptoms.
