A local drug recovery group is inviting the public to help them raise funds for a new building.
The Alano Society of Manitowoc is hosting a Diamond Jubilee this Saturday (June 28th) from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at their current building on S. 29th Street.
Board of Directors Member Leah Mabrey says the Alano Society helps recovering addicts by providing 12-step programs for alcohol, drugs, women’s issues, and more.
Their current building was built in 1949, but it’s not up to ADA compliance standards and has outdated plumbing and electrical systems below a concrete floor.
So, they are looking for a new place that’s already standing.
“We were going to build a new building,” she noted. “And it is $1.3 million was our estimate. And then we thought of repairing our building getting up to ADA code, and that’s $900,000.”
Mabrey says the ideal new building, with a cost between $500,000 and $750,000, would have a kitchen to serve meals and an area for meetings.
The group has already raised $22,000 through their members, but the public is also being asked to help through the jubilee by learning about their work.
Mabrey told us, “Throughout the whole function, we will have a brief 15-minute speakers with testimonies of what the 12 step programs have done for people.”
The event costs $25, which includes food from Our Legacy Restaurant, live music, hourly door prizes, and raffle baskets.
Attendees interested in trying to get a basket will get a special wristband.
“There’s a QR Code on that,” she described. “On our Alano Society site there is our current QR Code so anyone can give at any time.”
That QR Code can also be seen below.
Mabrey says it’s important that the community comes together to continue to change the stigma about drug addiction, as the Alano Society also raises money to continue its programming.
