A pair of recommendations from the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association that would have changed the landscape of high school basketball were voted down Wednesday by the WIAA Advisory Council.
One would have expanded the field of qualifiers from four to eight in all five divisions of both the boys’ and girls’ state basketball tournaments.
The second would have implemented a shot clock for non-conference games this upcoming season, pending agreement among participating teams, with full implementation starting in the 2027-28 season.
No specific vote totals or reasons were released, and by membership rule, they were not advanced to the Board of Control for consideration.
Meanwhile, several basketball recommendations were approved to take effect during the 2025-26 season.
One is an electronic release of unofficial preliminary electronic seeds for the girls’ and boys’ tournaments in weeks 30 and 31 of the WIAA calendar, respectively.
All boys’ regional finals will be required to start at either 4 or 7 p.m., girls sectional finals will be scheduled for 1 p.m. with the option of starting at 3 p.m. with WIAA executive office approval and schools will be allowed to reverse the regulation uniform colors for no more than three home games with mutual consent by each schools’ administration.
