A Sheboygan area representative is not happy with the Wisconsin Joint Finance Committee’s (JFC) money disbursement for education.
26th District Representative Joe Sheehan stated that the committee only increased the special education reimbursement rate to 35% in 2025-26 and 37.5% in 2026-27.
He said that Democrats recommended 60%. Sheehan also noted that the Wisconsin JFC didn’t increase general school aid and had no mention of early literacy funding.
The Sheboygan Democrat says his party recommended $1.1 billion for general school aid and $80 million for early literacy.
Sheehan also stated that the way the Republicans in the JFC handle the state budget means Wisconsin schools will continue to be neglected, and local property taxpayers will have to cover the costs.
The state budget deadline is this upcoming Monday (June 30th).
If Governor Tony Evers doesn’t sign the budget into law, the state government will not shut down, and spending rates will remain the same as those in the previous budget.
