Manitowoc’s Police Chief is reminding drivers to keep a lookout for kids.
On WOMT’s Be My Guest program, Nick Reimer said this is the time of year when children are out of school, meaning they are walking, riding bikes, driving scooters, and engaging in other activities.
“Drive careful, be vigilant,” he explained. “Look for kids, obviously there a little bit shorter than adults, they can come in between cars, different things that happen.”
Reimer continues to say that if you’re paying attention and driving at the speed limit, most people should be able to avoid an accident.
Reimer then stated, “But if you’re on your phone, it’s a big problem, or speeding, that’s another problem. Or just not paying attention for some reason. Bad things could happen.”
According to data from the Wisconsin DOT, in 2023, there were over 9,200 crashes that involved distracted driving.
There were only two accidents involving children under 14 in the state, but that number jumps to 236 distracted driving accidents for teens 15-19.
