Governor Tony Evers has made a statement following a recent decision by the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
On Tuesday (June 24th), in a 5-2 vote, the state Supreme Court affirmed the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ authority to enforce reporting and clean up for harmful contaminants like PFAS.
This decision also upheld the state Spill Law, which orders those responsible for the discharge of harmful substances into the environment to report such an instance while also being responsible for the restoration of the affected area to minimize harmful effects.
On the decision, Governor Evers said, “This is a historic victory for the people of Wisconsin and my administration’s fight against PFAS and other harmful contaminants that are affecting families and communities across our state.”
He added, “The Supreme Court’s decision today means that polluters will not have free rein to discharge harmful contaminants like PFAS into our land, water, and air without reporting it or taking responsibility for helping clean up those contaminants.”
