The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Board of Control meets today to discuss numerous winter sports recommendations, including two possible changes that could reshape the landscape of high school basketball.
One proposal would increase the number of state tournament qualifiers from 20 to 40 for both boys’ and girls’ basketball, meaning a total of eight teams in each of the five divisions.
This proposal, crafted by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association, would expand the state tournament from three to four days and multiple venues.
The boys’ tournament is played at the Kohl Center in Madison, and the girls’ tournament is played at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon.
Where those additional sites would be is unknown at this time.
The WIAA’s Basketball Coaches Advisory Committee advanced this proposal for consideration. The second is a discussion of adding a 35-second shot clock.
One proposal would allow the use of a shot clock for non-conference games in the 2025-26 season that would require a mutual agreement of the participating teams.
The second would be full implementation for all games by the 2027-28 season.
Both proposals would require two visible timepieces in each gym attached to the backboard supports.
One or both options could be approved by the Advisory Council, which would advance them onto the Board of Control for consideration.
