The 75th anniversary of the Rahr-West Art Museum continues with a classic 50s-themed event.
Sock Hop at the Rahr will be hosted at the museum (June 25th) from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the East Lawn.
The event includes music from the Del Rays, a classic car show, food trucks, and a costume contest.
Executive Director Greg Vadney explained on the WOMT’s Art Forward podcast that the event is based on watching movies and shows about the 1950s when he was growing up in the 1980s, including Back to the Future and Happy Days.
Vadney noted, “We hope that the audiences out here will show up and help us to get that vibe and think back of what that little museum was in 1950 and the first few years.”
Vadney also noted, “The Rahr-West Art Museum will be open during that event so you can check out some of the great events so you can check out some of the great exhibits at the Rahr-West while you’re there.”
The Rahr-West is celebrating its 75th anniversary after the first meeting of the Rahr Civic Center Board took place in 1950 in the City of Manitowoc’s Office of the Clerk.
From 1950 to the present, the museum has been operated by the City of Manitowoc, initially as a general public museum and later under the influence of patrons Ruth and John West, evolving into a highly regarded visual art museum.
