Authorities are warning the public of another scam hitting Northeastern Wisconsin.
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office has received recent reports from residents of brushing scams.
This type of scam occurs when a package that an individual never purchased arrives in the mail.
Often, the package will be empty or contain something of little to no value, with no clear sender displayed on the package.
Scammers more often than not have found a victim’s name and address online and will then use that information to post fake product reviews under the victim’s name.
Additionally, these packages will often contain a QR code that scammers are hoping you will scan with a mobile device.
These QR codes will bring you to a malicious website intended to steal your personal information.
If a package arrives at your residence that you did not order, authorities recommend notifying the delivery service and monitoring your online accounts for any possible suspicious activity.
While these scams were reported in Winnebago County, it is important for all Wisconsin residents to be aware of the methods used by scammers.
