Governor Tony Evers Official Portrait
Republican legislators are introducing a constitutional amendment aimed at restricting the governor’s ability to partially veto state budget bills.
The proposed change would still allow governors to eliminate entire sections or reduce funding amounts, but would block the current ability to delete individual words or digits.
This effort follows Governor Tony Evers’ controversial 2023 veto that effectively extended school funding for 400 years—a move upheld by the Wisconsin Supreme Court earlier this year.
Backers of the resolution argue that governors from both parties have misused the partial veto power.
