A man convicted of second-degree intentional homicide is getting more than 20 years in prison.
WBAY reports that 46-year-old Owen Backus was back in a Brown County Courtroom after a jury convicted him of the lesser charge when he was originally charged with 1st-degree intentional homicide in the death of Michael Hubbard.
Judge Marc Hammer sentenced Backus to spend 24 years in prison.
Backus knocked on the door of a resident on Western Avenue in Green Bay in December 2023, asking them to call police, saying he’d been in a fight.
When the police arrived, they found Hubbard with a cord around his neck and a shirt over his head.
He was later pronounced dead after attempts at CPR were unsuccessful.
According to the criminal complaint, Backus changed his story multiple times but always claimed self-defense in the attack.
