Row of police cars, with blue and red flashing sirens. selective focus
The Sheboygan Police Department will be on the lookout for a particular kind of aggressive driving behavior in the month of June.
The Department took to social media to let Sheboyganites know that they will be focusing on giving out warnings or tickets for following too closely or tailgating.
Tailgating is a preventable driving behavior that can lead to crashes and injuries.
Motorists driving ahead of you may have to stop suddenly for things such as pedestrians, animals, or other safety hazards, and Sheboygan Police say a reasonable distance between you and them allows for a reactionary gap.
Wisconsin statute states, “The operator of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicle and the traffic upon and the condition of the highway.”
The Department recommends the three-second rule while driving to keep an adequate distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
This means three seconds should pass after the car ahead passes by an object before your car does, allowing you to stop and avoid a crash.
This is in an effort to ensure those in the City of Sheboygan are adhering to safe and legal practices behind the wheel.
