The three newest additions to Wisconsin’s peregrine falcon population have been named.
Wisconsin Public Service has announced that the three chicks born at the Weston Power Plant near Wausau will go by Flaps, Lee, and Hurculees.
Flaps is named in honor of a peregrine falcon born in Green Bay in 1998 that nested in Port Washington from 2000 to 2006, producing 23 chicks.
Lee got his name from Rosalee, a peregrine falcon who nested at the Weston Power Plant and raised 19 chicks from 2016-2021.
Lastly, Hercules shares the name with a falcon who nested at the Valley Power Plant in Milwaukee from 2014-2023, raising 23 chicks.
WPS and We Energies began installing peregrine falcon nest boxes on power plants in 1992.
So far, 465 peregrine falcons have hatched at WPS and We Energies facilities, which accounts for 20% of all peregrine falcons born in Wisconsin.
