The group that organizes the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Manitowoc County is getting ready for this fall.
The local Alzheimer’s Association group held a sign-up event at Time Out Sports Bar and Grill on Thursday (June 5th), which included complimentary appetizers and drinks.
Event Coordinator CJ Werley has organized the area event for the last three years and is looking for more people to sign up for the September 27th Walk that starts at the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA.
The kickoff event was a way to get people inspired and teach people how they can make a difference in the fight to end Alzheimer’s.
Werley explained, “We like to get people registered as soon as possible to recruit people for their teams and ultimately raise money.”
Werley says fundraising isn’t required before the walk, but it’s part of raising awareness and advocacy for the disease.
The local group is also getting help from Larry’s Distribution.
The beverage company is putting up Michelob Ultra posters with information about the walk on it.
“A percentage of all those Michelob Ultra sales are benefiting the Manitowoc County Walk,” Werley stated. “And so we’re really grateful for that partnership.”
Anyone interested in signing up can find the Manitowoc County page by going to act.alz.org.
Walkers can start showing up at 8:30 a.m. An opening ceremony will kick off the event at 9:40 a.m., and the walk itself gets going at 10:00 a.m.
Werley says on average, about 10% of a community, but that is for those who get a diagnosis.
According to the official Walk to End Alzheimer’s website, deaths from the disease have doubled between 2000 and 2021, and one and three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.
