In Wisconsin, June is Dairy Month, and a prominent group in Manitowoc County is recognizing the importance of the dairy industry.
Patty Lehn, Executive Director of the Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center in Manitowoc, joined WOMT’s Be My Guest Program to discuss just how important dairy agriculture and those working in the industry are to what they do.
She called it, “The heart and soul of why we exist is the incredible importance of the agriculture industry, specifically dairy.”
While the Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center focuses on all forms of agriculture, Lehn noted why the primary focus is on dairy farming this month.
She explained, “We represent all of agriculture, but dairy is so important to our state and our county, so we definitely celebrate.”
One of the hallmarks of June Dairy Month every year is the Breakfast on the Farm celebration which is slated for tomorrow (June 8th) at 8:00 a.m. at the Twin Elm Family Farm.
This is an opportunity for all Manitowoc County residents, not just those in agriculture, to see a dairy farming operation up close.
These celebrations happen in every county across the state, and Lehn explained how big of an undertaking it is for the farms and families that host a Breakfast on the Farm.
“It’s a huge commitment,” she said. “I mean the thousands of people walking around your property. Its really a huge commitment and very generous of the farmers to be able to share that with the general public.”
In addition to tomorrow’s Breakfast on the Farm celebration, the Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center will be hosting events all month to honor the dairy farmers of Manitowoc County.
