After years of planning and hard work, a previously vacant plot of land in Manitowoc has been transformed.
Mayor Justin Nickels announced that “The old Elks Club property on the city’s northeast side has been revitalized,” following the official opening of the new Bayshore Trail.
The 10+ acre plot of land was purchased by the city over five years ago, and has since become home to a new road, a BayCare clinic, an assisted living facility, and now, a new walking trail.
In his announcement, Mayor Nickels noted, “We received a $369,400 grant from the State of Wisconsin Knowles-Nelson Stewardship program, to which the West Foundation added another $100,000. The remainder came from the TIF District, which supports the remaining development on the site.”
The trail, which connects the Mariners Trail and the Manitowoc Lincoln Park Zoo, also includes public paved trails, lighting, a future kayak launch, areas for fishing, benches, and a new bridge.
