A future housing project in Manitowoc has been approved for state and federal tax credits.
Over $1.5 million through the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority is going toward a future 59-unit apartment complex on the former Mirro site.
Mayor Justin Nickels announced that this would be the final step in making the project a reality on the land of the former Mirro factory.
Last year, Manitowoc received almost $2 million from a federal grant through the bipartisan infrastructure laws for the final cleanup of most of the site.
The money was used to remove several underground tanks but will continue to be used for excavating unsensitized soil as well as demolishing an abandoned utility tunnel.
The federal funding also imports clean fill and topsoil for the building and new sidewalk.
Nickels says construction on the 59-unit workforce housing project should begin in the Spring next year.
