A bill penned by an Eastern Wisconsin Senator aimed at helping cover training for volunteer firefighters has taken its first step toward becoming law.
Senator Andre Jacque explained that the measure, known as Assembly Bill 187, aims to “lighten this load – and boost retention and recruitment – by providing a stipend to cover training costs for these selfless public servants.”
He also cited that 92 percent of Wisconsin fire departments are volunteers or mostly volunteers, meaning fewer firefighters at those departments could pose a greater risk due to longer response times.
The measure will now go before the full Assembly and Senate before going to Governor Tony Evers’ desk for final approval.
