A crash involving a wrong-way driver claimed the lives of two Sheboygan County residents on Memorial Day.
The Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office reports receiving several 911 calls regarding a wrong-way driver on I-43 just after 12:30 a.m.
Before the deputies could find and stop the vehicle, it was involved in a head-on crash in the northbound lanes of the Interstate Highway just north of Highway H in the Town of Port Washington.
The driver of the offending vehicle, a 34-year-old Milwaukee man, was extracted from the vehicle and flown via Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital, while the 51-year-old female and 46-year-old male occupants of the other vehicle, both from Oostburg, were pronounced dead at the scene.
A 22-year-old Oostburg woman was extracted from the second vehicle and was said to have suffered serious injuries.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, and it is unclear if drugs or alcohol played any role in the crash.
