The Two Rivers Police Department is honoring the lifesaving efforts of a We Energies Employee.
Steve Liegl, the Director of IT Infrastructure and Operations for WEC Energy Group, was enjoying an afternoon with his family in Neshotah Park last August, when he overheard a beachgoer tell a police officer that two women were in trouble in the waters of Lake Michigan.
As reported on the We Energies website, Liegl used his Marine training to jump into action and rushed with the officer to help the women in need.
The duo had been pulled by the strong current roughly a quarter mile away from where they entered the lake into 75-foot-deep water.
Both women were saved after a rescue effort that lasted about an hour. In honor of his quick thinking and bravery, Two Rivers Police Chief Ben Meinert issued Liegl a Chief’s Award.
Liegl said of his actions, “I did what most people would do. I saw someone who needed help, and I did what I could.”
