As the temperatures begin to rise, Sheboygan’s health department is offering tips to avoid a pesky and potentially dangerous insect.
The Sheboygan County Division of Public Health is warning that tick exposure is most active from April to September and only increases throughout the summer.
They advise anyone who has been in the outdoors, even one’s backyard, to check themselves for ticks, which can cause Lyme disease.
This includes checking your clothing and any other gear you used while outside.
Pets are just as susceptible to ticks, if not more than humans, and should also be checked after any time spent outdoors.
Other tips to avoid ticks include using 0.5% permethrin-treated clothing or gear, using EPA-registered insect repellents, and knowing where to expect ticks, such as in grassy, brushy, or wooded areas.
Clothes worn while outside can be tumble-dried on high for ten minutes to kill ticks as well.
While tick exposure can occur year-round, Sheboygan’s Division of Public Health has issued this warning ahead of the official beginning of summer in June.
