Two cities in Eastern Wisconsin have been awarded federal grants for assessments and cleanups.
Manitowoc is getting a $500,000 Brownfield Assessment Grant while Brillion will receive almost $2 million to clean up a redevelopment area on Park Avenue.
The Brownfield grant for Manitowoc will be used to conduct seven environmental site assessments, which include 21 acres along River Point Drive, the 4-acre former tannery on Franklin Street, and a former dye house on Water Street.
The Brillion Iron Works complex functioned as a machine shop and iron forge from 1900 to 2016.
The site is vacant and contaminated with heavy metals, hydrocarbons, and other organic compounds.
The grant will be used to clean up the 145-acre site.
Communities across the US are getting nearly $267 million in Brownfield grants.
