The formation of a new Tax Incremental District (TID) in Sheboygan was a hotly discussed topic at this week’s Sheboygan Common Council meeting.
The Council met on Monday (May 19th) with the biggest item on the agenda being a vote to create TID 25 at the site of the former Memorial Hospital.
This meeting opened with public comments which featured two Sheboygan residents speaking out in strong opposition to the introduction of TID in the area located near North Avenue, 6th Street, and 7th Street on the City’s Northside.
The May 5th Common Council meeting opened in a similar fashion with four of the five residents speaking voicing their opposition.
TID 25 and its related project plan would develop the land into 21 plots of land to feature 21 single-family homes which many such as Alder Dean Dekker and residents alike, have said is not dense enough for the 7.5 acre of land.
Whereas District Two Alder John Belanger, who presides over the area where this proposal falls, has shown steadfast approval of creating TID 25 and the project plan along with it.
Additionally, at a recent town hall meeting held regarding the matter, no citizen speakers spoke in favor of establishing a TID on public land for various reasons.
This includes over $1.5 million in incentives to be paid, by the city, to the developer who paid little to no money for the land which is valued at roughly $1.4 million.
However, despite some citizen opposition, the Common Council approved turning the former Memorial Hospital site into a TID by a 9-1 vote, with the lone nay vote coming from Alder Grazia Parella.
