Waterford School District officials have confirmed that racist remarks and behavior were directed at Rufus King High School athletes during a recent track meet.
In a letter issued last Friday, the district acknowledged that students were subjected to stereotypes, name mispronunciations, and derogatory language such as being called “gangsters.”
The Rufus King athletes left the event early due to the hostile environment.
Waterford officials met with Rufus King representatives last Tuesday to offer a formal apology.
