A statewide initiative to achieve safer roads is now underway in Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Wisconsin State Patrol, and local law enforcement agencies are asking Wisconsinites to buckle their seatbelts during the Click It or Ticket campaign, which officially kicked off yesterday (May 19th).
The annual initiative that aims to reduce fatalities and other injuries due to motorists being unbuckled coincides with Memorial Day weekend each year and will run until June 1st.
While Click It or Ticket is happening, drivers can expect to see a heightened presence of law enforcement officers patrolling roads on the lookout for those without a seatbelt, with a focus on those driving at night.
In a survey conducted last year, 89% of state motorists wore their seatbelts, a decrease from 2023’s 92%.
Additionally, in 2023 over half of passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes were not wearing a seatbelt.
On the annual campaign, Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent Tim Carnahan said, “Wearing a seat belt is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce injuries and save lives during a crash. We should hold each other accountable and set a positive example for others in the vehicle.”
