The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is urging safety ahead of the ATV/UTV riding season.
One of the best ways to understand safety regulations in the state is to earn an ATV or UTV safety certification through a DNR-approved course. Any operator over the age of 12 is required to complete such a course and carry proof of certification while riding.
Lieutenant Jacob Holsclaw, a Wisconsin DNR off-highway vehicle administrator, said, “We want folks to create positive memories and have a great experience on our trails, and that only happens if everyone returns home safely at the end of the trip.”
In 2024 alone, 40 people died in ATV or UTV crashes in Wisconsin, with the majority of those individuals not wearing helmets.
These safety certification courses are also recommended for those who only ride a few times a year as inexperience has been noted as one of the top contributing factors in many serious crashes that occur across the state.
