An area state representative’s joint resolution about closing places of worship during a state of emergency has had a hearing.
3rd District Assemblyman Ron Tusler, who represents western Manitowoc and Calumet County, says the US was founded on the idea that you can practice any religion you want, and the government can’t interfere with that practice.
But 2020 complicated the issue because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tusler called it a great prohibition of the free exercise of religion.
The Harrison Republican also noted that while liquor stores, bars, and casinos were deemed “essential” and allowed to stay open, churches were forced to close initially and later adopt capacity limits.
The Joint Resolution would allow places of worship to stay open during a state of emergency, even during a pandemic.
The hearing took place on Wednesday, May 7th, in the Committee on Judiciary.
