The longest-running model shipbuilding contest in the U.S. returns to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum this weekend.
The 48th annual Midwestern Model Ships and Boat Contest starts today (May 16th), but the models will be displayed to the public during the museum’s regular business hours starting tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Communications Director Emily Shedal tells SeehaferNews.com that over 25 models will be in the contest.
She notes, “They are made by modelers from seven states across the Midwest, from as far away as Colorado.”
The model boats will be set up by the competitors before three judges decide which ship they like best in six categories.
But the public also gets to weigh in on what boats they like the best before 1:00 pm on Sunday.
“Guests who come to see the models can vote on their favorite,” she explained. “So, the people’s choice award is always a hit with the public.”
The Model Ships and Boat contest isn’t just for model enthusiasts.
Shedal says the event is for families as well.
“There will be a boat pond across the street from the museum,” she stated. “A large pool that will be filled with water where you can watch remote control models being used in that pond. And that’s always a hit with the kids.”
The public can view the model ships when they pay to get into the museum.
It’s $20 for adults, $13 for children 4-12 and children under three get in for free.
Modelers also get a chance to visit the Roger Street Fishing Village on Saturday for a special dinner and program.
