The Manitowoc Public School District has issued a safety alert after the rise of a concerning social media trend.
The school district has said that trends on platforms such as TikTok have been encouraging students to vandalize school property.
One of these trends includes students inserting metal objects into school-issued Chromebook laptop charging ports, which can damage the equipment and cause it to short-circuit.
Other trends encourage students to tamper with electrical outlets or damage school bathrooms.
MPSD has said that these actions are highly dangerous, pose safety risks, and result in costly repairs.
With that in mind, the district has stated, “Students who intentionally damage their Chromebook will be charged a $150 replacement fee.”
Additionally, those who vandalize school property will be held financially responsible while also being subject to disciplinary action such as suspension, expulsion, or potential criminal charges.
MPSD has asked parents to talk to their children about the risks and consequences of these harmful social media trends popping up online.
