An Eastern Wisconsin State Senator is praising a recent executive order signed by President Donald Trump.
The measure, known as Improving the Safety and Security of Biological Research, halts federally funded gain-of-function (GoF) research on potential pandemic pathogens and begins to implement sweeping oversight, enforcement, and transparency reforms.
Three months ago, Senator Andre Jacque of New Franken led a coalition of Wisconsin legislators in sending a formal letter to the President, asking him to take action to end gain-of-function research.
Such research is described as any medical research that genetically alters an organism in a way that may enhance the biological functions of gene products.
Sen. Jacque called the executive order “a decisive victory for public safety, national security, and scientific integrity,” noting that “Gain-of-function research that makes pathogens more dangerous has always carried unacceptable risks with questionable benefits.”
