Multiple Eastern Wisconsin counties rank in the top ten for deer-related car crashes.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has released crash data from last year, revealing that Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Fond du Lac, Outagamie, and Winnebago Counties rank among the top when it comes to the likelihood of getting into a car accident involving a deer.
Sheboygan County comes in at five with 763 deer-related crashes last year, Fond du Lac County in 6th with 683, Outagamie is 7th with 666, Manitowoc County’s 645 puts them in 7th, and Winnebago County rounds out the top ten with 532 in 2024.
Across the state last year, there were 17,000 crashes involving deer which injured 708 people and nine of those crashes resulted in death.
According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, deer crash numbers increase in May and June in Wisconsin as female deer look for places to give birth and younger deer break away from their mothers.
Addressing these numbers, Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent Tim Carnahan said, “Deer can be erratic and hard to spot, so it’s important that drivers are looking ahead and paying close attention to the sides of the road.”
Last year the leading county for deer crashes in the state was Waukesha County with 937.
