A 4th-grade student at one of Plymouth’s elementary schools has dedicated the school’s gymnasium to a recently passed former principal.
4th grader Abel Fouts has named the gym after former Principal Chris Helmer, who passed away last August after a two-year battle with cancer.
Abel, a true fundraising force, earned the naming rights to Horizon’s gymnasium after being the school’s top fundraiser for the annual American Heart Association Kids Heart Challenge.
During the most recent campaign, Abel raised an impressive $5,457, beating the entire school’s fundraising goal of $4,000 on his own.
In total, Horizon raised just under $9,000 to help fight heart disease and strokes in America.
This marks the second consecutive year Abel has earned the top fundraising spot for the campaign, and the second year he has earned the right to name the gymnasium for the upcoming school year.
The 4th grader is no stranger to impressive fundraising efforts for the Kids Heart Challenge, having raised $1,184 in 2021, $1,150 in 2022, $1,350 in 2023, and $5,457 this past year, putting his total just shy of $10,000.
At the dedication ceremony for the gymnasium, two benches were also donated by PATH in honor of Principal Helmer as well.
