The Fond du Lac Fire Rescue Department reminds residents not to use flammable liquids to light recreational fires after a person was taken to the hospital when a gas can exploded.
WBAY reports that fire rescue crews were called to North Park Avenue for a reported structure fire and an explosion.
The crew found that the fire was contained in a portable fire pit but that one person at the home had been burnt and needed medical attention.
A man was taken to a hospital with multiple burns to his hands, arms, and face.
Fond du Lac Fire Rescue determined that the burn victim was trying to light a fire pit with gasoline, pouring it from the can onto cardboard in the fire pit.
The gasoline on the cardboard would light the stream of gasoline on fire and caused the gas can to explode in the victim’s hands and lit his clothes on fire.
There is an ordinance in the City of Fond du Lac not allowing the use of flammable liquids in recreational fire pits.
