More details have been released regarding a Wisconsin Maritime Museum project that just received state funding.
$40,000 has been awarded to the museum through the Vibrant Spaces Grant Program for the Captain Carus Maritime Garden.
This project will add a green space along the Franklin Street corridor, specifically at the southwest corner of Franklin and South 12th Streets.
Named in honor of Captain Edward Carus (1860–1947), who lived and passed away on this historic property, the garden will span 20,000 square feet, adjacent to the building, which will be the Wisconsin Maritime Heritage Center.
The space will incorporate oversized maritime artifacts interpreted for the public, an outdoor classroom area, enhanced accessible parking, new lighting, updated signage, and exterior enhancements to adjacent buildings, and will include a public archaeology component, exploring the historic foundation of the Captain Carus home, and future updates to the Carus photography mural, currently installed on the building’s east facade.
Maritime Museum Director Kevin Cullen tells SeehaferNews.com, “The project will create a dynamic, multifunctional space designed for educational programs, entertainment events, community gatherings, and casual use by residents and visitors alike, while also boosting foot traffic for nearby businesses along the Franklin Street corridor.”
Construction is expected to begin this summer, with the Captain Carus Maritime Garden opening to the public in 2026.
