An East Central Wisconsin man will be spending time in federal prison after he fired a shotgun at a postal worker.
Senior U.S. District Court Judge William C. Griesbach sentenced 44-year-old Benjamin L. Joos from Tigerton to spend 18 months in federal prison, followed by 3 years on extended supervision.
A female U.S. Postal Carrier was delivering mail the afternoon of September 24th, 2024, when her passenger side window suddenly shattered.
She then reported seeing Joos pointing a shotgun at her, screaming “get away from my box” and “leave my mail alone.”
When confronted by police, Joos admitted to having consumed “4 to 5 whisky and cokes” prior to the incident, and a blood draw came back showing he was twice the legal limit for a presumption of intoxication.
Judge Griesbach took note of Joos’s “lack of criminal record, strong community engagement, and a positive work history,” but determined that the serious nature of the offense and the profound effect his actions had on the victim required a prison term.
Joos was also ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution to the victim.
