A Lieutenant with the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office is being honored for his quick thinking and actions in a life-threatening situation.
Lt. Kyle Stotzheim was given a Life Saving Award for his heroic actions in helping a 79-year-old man who suffered a traumatic amputation of his hand while using a radial saw on March 31st.
Lt. Stotzheim was monitoring radio traffic when he heard the report.
He quickly arrived on the scene and found the man experiencing a potentially fatal level of bleeding.
Lt. Stotzheim quickly applied a tourniquet above the completely severed hand and added a second tourniquet when the first was not enough.
He successfully stopped the bleeding and cared for the man until EMS arrived on the scene.
Sheriff Dan Hartwig said, “There is no doubt that Lt. Stotzheim’s rapid response, situational awareness, and skilled application of emergency medical care directly contributed to saving this man’s life. We are proud to have individuals like Lt. Stotzheim who exemplify the very best of our profession.”
Lt. Stotzheim will officially receive his award at the annual swearing-in and awards ceremony in October.
