A Deputy with the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office has been honored for his life-saving actions.
Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig has announced that Deputy Chris Hemauer has been given a Life Saving Award.
Hemauer was dispatched to a one-vehicle crash on February 21st with initial reports suggesting the driver sustained a broken leg and that his vehicle was hanging off the side of a bridge.
Upon Arrival, Hemauer extracted the driver from the vehicle to realize that his leg was not broken but was traumatically amputated below the knee by a guardrail post that pierced the vehicle.
The Deputy sprang into action, understanding the severity of the situation, and applied a tourniquet to the driver’s severely injured leg.
This quick intervention not only stopped the bleeding but also saved the driver’s life in a critical situation.
In his announcement, Sheriff Hartwig said, “Deputy Hemauer’s quick thinking, calm under pressure, and application of life-saving medical techniques exemplify the importance of having well-trained, prepared law enforcement professionals in the field.”
Deputy Hemauer will be formally recognized for his life-saving actions at the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office annual swearing-in and awards ceremony in October.
