The Wisconsin Maritime Museum is again honoring the state boat of Wisconsin, 80 years later.
A remembrance ceremony for the USS Lagarto takes place this Saturday (May 3rd) at 1:00 p.m.
The event marks how long the Lagarto was sunk and how it’s been 20 years since it was discovered in the Gulf of Thailand in May 2005.
The tribute will honor all 86 men who were lost on May 3rd, 1945, during a WWII patrol in the Pacific. The USS Lagarto was sunk by the Japanese minelayer Hatsutaka.
The commemorative ceremony will include patriotic music, a reading of the names of the lost crew, a flower placement, and the tolling of a memorial bell.
The program will conclude with a flag presentation to a Lagarto crew member’s family members and a salute from the USS Cobia.
The Lagarto was the 21st of the 28 submarines built in Manitowoc during World War II, and the keel was laid on January 12th, 1944.
