Yet another new scam has been reported, this time in Winnebago County.
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office has announced that they’ve received reports of a Geek Squad subscription scam.
Geek Squad is a tech support entity that is a part of Best Buy customer support.
Reports to authorities say victims have received an email invoice that appears to be from Geek Squad regarding an automatic subscription renewal.
The email will also contain a link or phone number to contact Best Buy.
However, once contacted, scammers will then claim that they have refunded a victim too much and then request payment for the difference.
Payments asked for include cryptocurrency, Bitcoin ATMS, and gift cards.
These emails will appear legitimate at first, featuring invoice and customer numbers, but they are fraudulent.
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents that any entity asking for payment via these methods is more often than not a scam.
They have also noted that users should be suspicious of unexpected emails, text messages, or phone calls that include a payment request.
Anyone who believes they are the target of scammers should contact their local law enforcement agency.
