The Town of Newton Board of Supervisors will put a plan together for a new fire station.
The town approved allowing the town board to borrow up to $7 million during the 2025 Spring General Election.
Kelly Christiansen, a now former member of the town board, says that about 1,100 out of 1,600 registered voters in the township voted on the issue, which makes it a good turnout.
Christiansen previously told Seehafernews.com that the current fire station is too small for modern fire trucks.
But There are also issues about the safety of the firefighters.
“Wash down of your equipment or your clothing, your gear,” he explained. “To make it safe for the firefighters. There are so much more toxins when there are fires today compared to the more natural aspects years ago.”
That’s because the current fire station doesn’t have the appropriate ventilation and showers. Christiansen says the town board will be meeting on May 12th at 7:00 pm to discuss what’s next for getting plans to build the new fire station.
“Creating a physical drawing together that’s a buildable project and then securing the funding to pay for this,” he noted. “We’d like to think you know as many resources as possible that would be available outside of paying with taxes.”
The original fire station was built in 1963 and had a last addition in 1991.
The town explained that building a new fire station would maximize their investment and will be able to serve the community for the next 50 years.
