The Green Bay Packers broke a two-decade-long drought on day one of the NFL Draft.
With the 23rd overall pick, the Packers selected Wide Receiver Matthew Golden, making him the first wide receiver taken by Green Bay in the first round since 2002.
When his name was called, the packed Lambeau Field parking lot erupted with joy, which is an experience Golden said he will never forget.
“It was definitely different, man. That was the best feeling I had my whole life. I can’t even explain it,” he said with a smile. “I feel like I was just out there having fun.”
While he would have been ecstatic to be selected by any team, Golden said his versatility and drive to be the best will make him a perfect fit in Titletown.
“I love football and I love being around an organization that loves football,” he explained. “I know coming here, they’re going to push me to be the best version of myself.”
Golden also spoke highly of the Packer faithful, who came out in droves to watch him begin his NFL journey.
“Just the energy. Man, it’s different,” he said. “I could tell they love their Packers. That’s something that means a lot to me. I feel like they make players want to play even better. Just being somewhere like that is truly special.”
As for his goals for the season, he said he wants to do the Lambeau Leap early and often.
“I got to get one a game.”
As of this morning, the Packers will next be on the clock for pick number 22 in rounds two, four, and six, number 23 in rounds three and five, and numbers 21 and 34 in round 7.
