One of the most recognizable retailers in the country is seeking millions from the City of Sheboygan.
A lawsuit filed by Walmart in relation to the store located on Taylor Drive alleges that the city’s real estate tax assessment of $18,010,500 in 2023 was more than $8 million more than it should have been.
Walmart and its legal counsel, Chris Strohbehn, allege that as of January 1st, 2023, the value of the property was no more than $9,380,000, and they also believe that the City’s assessment was not uniform with that of other properties in Sheboygan and across the state.
For this reason, Walmart believes they are entitled to a refund of the 2023 property taxes paid in excess plus statutory interest.
The lawsuit was formally filed back in November of 2023 and has come up again for the Sheboygan Common Council to discuss.
At the April 14th meeting of Sheboygan’s Common Council, they referred the matter to the Finance and Personnel Committee, which will discuss it further at a future meeting.
