With the start of the NFL Draft now underway, five eastern Wisconsin health departments are reminding attendees to check how protected they are against measles.
City of Menasha Health Department Health Officer Kristine Hutter explains, “Measles spreads quickly and is among the most contagious diseases. 9 out of 10 people around someone with measles will become infected.”
The disease is spread through coughing and sneezing and can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a place.
Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control reported 712 confirmed measles cases in the U.S., affecting children and adults in 24 states and New York City.
Currently, there are no reported cases in Wisconsin, but with the NFL Draft going on with many people gathering, the multiple health departments are asking those who can get updated on the Mumps, Measles, and Rubella or MMR combination vaccine.
More information about the disease can be found online at dhs.wisconsin.gov/immunization/measles.
