The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office is doing its part to keep work zones safe.
This week, April 21st through the 25th, is recognized as National Work Zone Awareness Week, and the Sheriff’s Office is sharing tips and recommendations to keep motorists and workers out of harm’s way.
Along with the tagline “Respect the zone so we all get home,” the Sheriff’s Office asks drivers to be patient, attentive, and to slow down when entering any work zone.
They also recommend eliminating distractions such as cell phones, eating, or drinking, which divide a driver’s attention from the road.
Additionally, it is illegal in the state of Wisconsin to talk on a handheld cell phone while driving through a work zone.
They also want drivers to expect the unexpected as speeds will be reduced, traffic lanes may be changed, and people or vehicles may be working on or near the road.
In all work zones, signage will be displayed inside and before warning drivers of what lies ahead, and those signs must be adhered to ensure workers’ safety.
