Lakeland University’s Esports team recently participated in a fundraiser to help children suffering from cancer.
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation held its annual Unlocking a Cure event earlier this month, and the esports team did their part by holding a charity live stream to raise money.
This is the second consecutive year Lakeland Esports live-streamed for the fundraising event, raising $1,340 last year and $1,400 this year.
However, thanks to a $1,000 matching donation from Northwestern Mutual, this year’s total came out to $2,400.
The live stream consisted of the esports team showcasing their talents in their featured games, playing with viewers, and competing in exhibition matches against the Carthage College Esports teams.
Lakeland Esports Coach Brett Sheldon said, “This event is a great way for our students to get involved in the community and raise awareness of a disease that affects too many people.”
Looking forward to the future, Sheldon also said, “We are already planning our stream for next year and hope to make it bigger and better.”
